Call Richardson: No Desert Rock
Last week the U.S. EPA
granted Sithe Global Power the air permits it needs to build the Desert Rock
coal-fired power plant near Farmington. If left unchallenged, that decision will
mean more mercury, more arsenic, more lead, more dioxins, more hydrogen chloride
and more hydrogen fluoride in the air.
The EPA may have won the first round, but there are many
more to go. Before Sithe breaks ground on the plant, the company will need to
have more permits approved – and that gives us more time to keep building a
stronger scientific, legal and political case against the plant. We will be challenging the EPA’s decision and
working to block other permits needed by the company to meet Clean Water Act
and Endangered Species Act requirements.
With Sithe inching closer to building the proposed plant, we
need to continue to stand together and tell our decision makers to remain
committed to their opposition of the power plant. We’re not backing down and
neither should Bill Richardson and Gary King.
Both have spoken out against the plant, the rushed approval process and
the unanswered questions in Sithe’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
Our state’s leaders need to know we support their continued
efforts to stand up against this environmental disaster. Please call Governor
Richardson (505-476-2200) now.
Here's a sample message you can leave:
"Helllo, I'd like to leave a message for Governor Richardson. My name is ________ and I live in _____, New Mexico. I strongly oppose the Desert Rock coal-fired power plant. Desert Rock would drastically increase global warming emissions, pollute our air, water and sky with mercury and other harmful pollutants, and negatively impact public health. I fully support your appeal of EPA's air permit for this dangerous and reckless plant."
