Gulf oil spill disaster

The oil spill unfolding on the Louisiana coast is a disaster. Please tell President Obama to pull back his plans for more oil drilling on our nation’s shores in places including Florida, the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and off the Outer Banks.

The oil slick from BP’s rig is now three times the size of Rhode Island, with 200,000 gallons of crude per day threatening to cover sperm whales, brown pelicans, shrimp, fish, and the fragile coast itself. We must not allow more drilling off of our coasts.

Dear President Obama,

In light of the unfolding disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I am writing to urge you to reverse course on your recent plans to open our coasts to more oil drilling. There are now one million gallons of oil floating off the coast of Louisiana, threatening untold destruction to wildlife and the environment. If we ever needed a reminder that "drill baby drill" is the wrong way to go, we now have it.

And yet, your administration is currently still moving forward with a plan to expand offshore drilling to more than 200 million acres off our nation's shores.

I do not want to see more birds, beaches, and boats covered in oil slicks. I urge you to halt plans to expand drilling, and instead use your power as president to reinstate the moratorium on offshore oil drilling on our coasts.

Sincerely,
