Letter	Dear Interstate Stream Commission, As you know, carving its way through 650 miles of America's first designated wilderness area, the Gila River is New Mexico's last free-flowing river and one of the few remaining un-dammed rivers in the American Southwest. The Gila River is one of New Mexico's most important treasures and deserves long-term protection. However, the Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) which provides up to $128 million in federal subsidies to New Mexico for construction of a water project on the Gila, poses a significant threat to the health and viability of this critical riparian ecosystem. We need a common sense approach that can satisfy the future water needs of the region while also maintaining the free flow of the Gila River. The Act allows for $66 million of the $128 million federal subsidy to be expended for any "water utilization projects that meet a water supply demand." Choosing the "no diversion" option and meeting the needs of the region with this approach is the best way to plan for our future and protect New Mexico's natural environment. Please protect New Mexico's last wild river!
