Protect our treasured lands: Stop toxic mining!

Across the west, high gold and uranium prices are driving a huge increase in mining claims from multi-national companies eager for a slice of the profit. Unfortunately, our most treasured lands lack the necessary safeguards to protect them from the degradation of hardrock mining. The U.S. Senate is currently looking at updating the federal mining act and we need to be sure they include protections for our streams, forests and wild lands.

Letter	Dear Senator, There are some places that we should be protecting forever. Our roadless areas, wilderness areas and national parks are treasured across New Mexico and the United States for their unparalleled beauty. Unfortunately, perfectly legal mining claims endanger the beauty and the health of these areas. I worry that the rising price of gold, increasing demand for uranium, and a race to pollute before the end of the industry-friendly Bush administration all add up to serious problems for these treasured lands. By passing H.R. 2262, the House took the first step to protect our streams, rivers, forests and wild lands from this trend expanding in the future. It’s time for the Senate to do the same. Sincerely,
