Gila River Needs Water to Run Wild - Albuquerque Journal (new window)

This month marks the 35th anniversary of the landmark 1972 Clean Water Act, the goal of which was to make all U.S. waterways swimmable and fishable by 1983. Clearly there is still a great disconnect between the law's original goals and the current state of waterways throughout the nation.

Governor Richardson has issued an Executive Order extending by six months a moratorium on new oil and gas drilling in Santa Fe County and the Galisteo Basin. The moratorium will allow more time for government agencies to gather information and begin rulemakings to protect water aquifers, archeological and cultural resources, and wildlife in this ecologically fragile area. The extended temporary moratorium will be in place through January 24, 2009.

Governor Richardson Renews Call for Protection of Otero Mesa - Office of Governor Bill Richardson Press Release

Today Governor Richardson sent a letter to the Manager of the Bureau of Land Management calling for the designation of an Otero Mesa Grasslands Wildlife Area of Critical Environmental Concern. This designation would allow for protection of wildlife habitat, wilderness characteristics, and critical groundwater supply, focusing on the importance of this thriving desert ecosystem.

Today Governor Richardson along with Governors of Washington and Oregon sent a letter to the Senate Energy Committee calling for reform of the 1872 Mining Law. The 1872 Mining Law governs mining practices on federal lands today, but is a relic of frontier-era America.

A large majority of New Mexico voters support reintroducing the Mexican gray wolf, according to a statewide poll released Monday. Nearly three in four New Mexicans, or 70 percent of registered voters, said they favored the embattled program, compared to only 21 percent who opposed it.

County suspends Galisteo Basin drilling for one year - Santa Fe New Mexican (new window)

The Santa Fe County Commission on Tuesday banned oil and gas drilling in the Galisteo Basin area for at least a year. The move was greeted with thunderous applause by most of the 100 or so people in attendance.
