Today, the Senate Corporation and Transportation committee voted to
table Senate Bill 57, a measure sponsored by Senator Bernadette Sanchez
(Albuquerque).
Senate Bill 57, if passed, would create a
regulatory taskforce biased toward industry that would review the
state's regulatory authorities, possibly leading to deregulation and a
weakening of New Mexico's environmental agencies' ability to promulgate
important environmental rules and regulations.
Senate Bill 57 is
one piece of a legislative package of bills designed to weaken New
Mexico's regulatory processes and comes in response to strong
environmental rulemakings passed earlier this year, like the Clean Cars
Program.
"We're pleased by today's vote. The committee recognized
that this bill would sacrificie public health, safety and our
environment," said Environment New Mexico advocate, Lauren Ketcham.
