The Western Climate Initiative
Seven states and two Canadian provinces have joined forces to develop a comprehensive regional greenhouse gas emissions reduction program, called the Western Climate Initiative (WCI). Created in 2007 by the governors of New Mexico, California, Arizona, Oregon and Washington, the WCI now includes four additional partners: British Columbia, Manitoba, Montana and Utah.
This summer, the WCI will announce a plan for a market-based cap and trade system to reduce global warming pollution to 15 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.
“While the federal government has failed to act, New Mexico and other western states are leading by example, working to develop real solutions to global warming,” said Environment New Mexico Advocate Lauren Ketcham.

Environment New Mexico’s Lauren Ketcham joined partners from the Sierra Club and other groups to release a new report on global warming and heavy rains.
