What we do
Whether it’s exploring Carlsbad Caverns, hiking the 4th of July Trail, or enjoying a special place closer to home, New Mexico’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the values we share are too often threatened.
We research the issues and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our reports, news conferences and interviews with reporters, we help the media cover environmental issues in ways that make sense. Our canvassers meet citizens where they are — starting conversations in public places or going to door to door — explaining our mission while raising awareness and funds for environmental protection.
When decisions are being made about our environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We speak up for our environment, making our case to public officials and helping you make your voice heard when it matters most.

RESULTS

- Our drinking water is safer. Developers must consider available water supplies before building thanks in part to New Mexico’s efforts to protect our drinking water.
- The Gila still flows freely. A disastrous development project would have dammed and diverted New Mexico’s last free-flowing river. Our advocacy helped put a stop to the project.
- Standing up for Otero Mesa. To keep the stunning Otero Mesa free from mining and drilling, we’ve submitted thousands of signatures calling on President Obama to make it a national monument.
