Recent injuries and deaths due to pipeline accidents and explosions have renewed the public’s concerns regarding pipeline safety. On August 19, 2000 an explosion on an El Paso Natural Gas Company pipeline near Carlsbad killed 12 people, two extended families, including a six-month old infant. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. On June 10, 1999, in Bellingham, Washington, a pipeline exploded, killing two ten-year-old boys and an 18-year-old man.

A study comparing Albuquerque’s transit system with 25 other cities similar in population size released today by the New Mexico Public Interest Research Group (NMPIRG) Education Fund shows that Albuquerque ranks 15th out of 25 in total annual ridership, 15th out of 25 in service effectiveness or the amount of passengers traveling per mile, and 24th out of 25 in cost effectiveness, measured as the amount of money spent per mile ridden by passengers.

New Mexicans treasure their beautiful vistas of snow-capped mountains, desert mesas,and full sky sunsets. They value their long history of diverse cultures merging upon the state known as the “Land of Enchantment.” The people of New Mexico want to see their children grow up with good quality schools and clean, attractive and safe neighborhoods. All these elements of what New Mexicans treasure as their quality of life is threatened by poorly managed growth. Development is occurring in a haphazard manner, jeopardizing New Mexico’s communities.

Senate-hopeful Representative Tom Udall and Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico’s Congressional delegation voted for the environment 100% of the time in the 110th Congress, according to the annual Congressional Scorecard on major environmental issues released today by Environment New Mexico. Environment New Mexico is distributing the individual Congressional scorecards to tens of thousands of households in New Mexico as part of its door-to-door campaign to build awareness around the country’s most pressing environmental issues, like passing legislation in Congress requiring a minimum amount of electricity come from clean, renewable energy sources, creating a national cap and trade program and extending renewable energy and energy efficiency tax incentives to growing renewable businesses in New Mexico.
